Choosing the right first AI workflow

A practical way to find a useful opportunity, limit scope, and test whether the result is worth building.

The first AI project should teach you something useful about your business. A well-chosen workflow has a clear task, available information, and a result people can assess.

Look for a bounded problem

Consider work that repeats often and involves reading, summarizing, finding, or drafting. Start with one step rather than an entire department.

Define the input, the expected output, and the person who will review it. Avoid a scope that depends on solving several unknowns at once.

Check the information

Can the system access the knowledge it needs? Are the sources organized and appropriate for the task? Is there a way to tell when the answer is wrong?

Information quality can be the constraint even when the model is capable.

Decide what stays human

Identify the decisions that need approval and the actions that must remain outside the system. Make escalation a normal part of the workflow.

Test a proof of value

Agree on a small set of representative cases and compare the current process with the proposed approach. Assess usefulness, review effort, failure behavior, and operating cost.

Use what you learn to decide whether to expand, redesign, or stop. A clear decision is a useful outcome.
